Matt Walsh is a veteran media professional who has been involved in the industry since he was fourteen years old. After getting his start in radio in the United States, he began working for CNN in Atlanta, Georgia.
He was involved in many different aspects of news production as a writer, editor, and producer. In 1999, Matt jumped at the chance to join CNN’s Hong Kong bureau when the organization was looking to expand their offices in Asia. He became responsible for maintaining the editorial quality of CNN programming that originated from Hong Kong.
In addition to his work as a journalist, Matt also owns and operates Media Advisers Asia, a training and consulting company.
He travels extensively across Asia to conduct workshops for new and veteran media professionals in order to help them expand their skills and keep abreast of new developments in their field.
He is also a voice over artist whose voice can be heard throughout Hong Kong on television, radio, and even at the customs declaration line at Hong Kong International Airport.
Recently, Matt began teaching at the University of Hong Kong’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre, working with prospective journalists at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
He sees this as natural progression of his career and thoroughly enjoys teaching his students and seeing when they start to understand the concepts they learn from him.
Matt is looking to increase his role at HKU and hopes to stay with the university and the JMSC for the foreseeable future.
