001 300x200 Sip and Bite of Organic LifeHalfway to The Peak along the narrow escalator in Central, the signboard of a small café named ‘Life’ can be easily ignored by many travellers whose hands are full of bags and cameras in Hong Kong.

Life Restaurant & Bar is a three-storey wooden world – with wooden doors, stairs, chairs, tables, and a bar. Even the menus are made of something between wood and paper.

On the first floor of Life, the ceiling is very high. The window is big. So the fresh air keeps coming in. At night, the rooftop is open to customers.

All food and drink served are vegetarian yet rich in flavour and variety – meatless burgers, homemade cakes and cookies made of organic wholegrain flour and organic raw sugar, organic soya made of yogurt and wild berries, to name but a few.

Life Organic Restaurant & Bar, CentralA dinner costs HK$200 per person on average. A burger costs HK$108. Many people keep coming regularly despite the price. Some regular customers are vegetarians who believe if cooked well, vegetables taste even better than meat.

When asked about which tastes better, organic food or conventional food, an organic food super fan said, ‘Organic food is much more tasty than average food.’

Moosa Al-Issa, current owner of the Life, said he has been trying to use the best natural products to prepare meals for customers but not all of the food are organic because not every organic ingrediant is easy to get. Pointing to my carrot juice which cost HK$29, he said that was conventional, and not organic.

Al-Issa has been working for Life for four years and became a owner about a year ago. With more people in Hong Kong pursuing a natural and organic lifestyles, he is confident in his business.
