Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated cities in the world; most local people live in very tiny house. While, people try to improve their living condition in several creative and optimistic ways.
Stephanie lives in Tong Lau, which is a traditional and tenement building in Southern China and Hong Kong.
The old Tong Lau in Hong Kong
In recent years, although Hong Kong government has endeavored to protect the historical building –Tong Lau, it is too old to survive in the modern Hong Kong.
Since most Tong Lau is not available for living because of its poor condition, probably, Stephanie and her fellows will be the last generation living in Tong Lau.
The girl showed how the young people make their life confortable and homey in Tong Lau, for example, to make full use of the space, they set their bed in the living room behind the sofa. A bigger mattress is applied to enlarge the size of bed, and they brought new carpet to refresh the atmosphere of the old house.
All the furniture is constructed by them, including the wardrobe, which is used as the screen to separate the room. Their efforts create the new life of Tong Lau inside the building. The young appreciates the culture and history of Tong Lau, regardless of the limitation of the housing condition.
Tong Lau reserved the architecture culture in Hong Kong, and reflected some living problems. With the creative people here,life in Tong Lau records the unique living culture in Hong Kong with the development of modernization and globalization.
